2/24-2/28
Hello!
February is almost over and we cannot believe it!
We really enjoyed the field trip to the children's theatre on Tuesday. We saw Little Red Riding Hood...Cajun Style! We even got to read the book the next day and journal about our experience.
Literacy:
We started learning about short vowels this week. We have learned several songs to help us remember the short vowels and practiced spelling/reading words with short vowels. We focused on the short vowel "a" this week. Words like cat, apple, bat, math and mat are all words with short vowel "a". This is a hard concept but we are catching on! We will also be learning a new site word on Friday. That new word is does! Look for this word this weekend. We are going to enjoy our last day or writing how to books this week too! On to the next writing unit next week.
Math:
We learned about another object that we can do range cards with this week...lima beans! We are still working on range cards each week and we are really starting to become quick with addition facts because of this. We are also still studying 2d and 3d shapes. Making shapes with geo boards (rubber bands and peg boards) and marshmallows/toothpicks are just some of the fun things that we are doing to learn about shapes! Counting sides, vertices and comparing shapes to each other are all goals for this new math unit. Comparing shapes and verbalizing how they are the same/different is the hardest part!
Science:
Our science experiment this week has been interesting! We put white carnations in colored water on Monday. They have not changed one bit! We are going to add some more food coloring tomorrow to see if that makes any difference. We love coming in each morning and rushing over to see if anything new has happened. We are learning the steps of a science experiment as well as how to make predications.
Author in Me!
We are studying Dr. Seuss for the next two weeks! We will be learning all about who he is and we will be reading lots of his books. On Monday March 3rd we are having "Kid in a Hat" day in honor of the book Cat in the Hat. Your child can wear a hat to school on Monday to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday which is March 2nd.
Thank you for donating supplies so that our Dr. Seuss unit is fun and exciting!

February 17th-February 21st
Hello!
Finally....a normal week!
We hope you enjoyed the art gallery crawl today! We worked really hard on our art and we are so glad you could join us. Our valentine party was also a huge hit. Reading all of the sweet couplets from your kids was definitely the highlight of my week!
This week we played catch up on all of our art gallery things. Next week we will start a new centers unit called "Author In Me." The first author we sill study will be Dr. Seuss! How fun!
Literacy:
We are still learning about CVC words and writing our How To books. We have been reading a lot this week and we look forward to learning about long and short vowels in the upcoming weeks. We will also be studying a new site word this week.... are! Look for this word this weekend.
Math:
We will continue to do range cards once a week. We also started a new math unit this week. Our new unit is shapes! We have been learning about 2D shapes and 3D shapes. Some new vocabulary to go with these shapes is: vertices (points), sides and dimensional. We compared these two shapes, went on a shape hunt and made some books!
Our next science experiment (either tomorrow or next week) will be watching flowers soak up water through their stems using colored water! We cannot wait!
We are also looking forward to our field trip to the Children's Theatre on Tuesday!
**Hopefully everyone received my email from earlier this morning about strep throat going around our classroom. If your child is throwing up, has a fever or is feeling lethargic please keep them home. We really do not want any more children getting sick! Remember they also need to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. Thank you for your help with this!

Hello! ANNOUNCEMENTS!!
Four big events coming up in the next few weeks!!
February 11th we have another field trip to the Laurels Nursing Home. Sign up if you are interested in going with us.
February 14th we have our Valentines Reading Party at 1:15. We need lots of adults on hand to help us read our Valentine couplets. Look to sign up for this in a separate sign up genius from Stephanie Mack.
February 20th we have our Artist Gallery Crawl in our classroom. All parents/Grandparents welcome (School policy says siblings should remain in their class. See me for exceptions, please.) Our time is 11:00-11:45. Look for another sign up genius for fancy artist snacks and juice to accompany our gallery crawl.
February 25 we have a trip to Charlotte to see the Children's Theater production of A Cajun Red Ridinghood. I only need 5 volunteers ($7-$8 plus parking fee) to join us. Your child will need to ride to and from the theater with you to relieve crowding on the bus.
A sign up genius for several of these events is here : www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0C4FA5A82BA4FF2-februaruy
We are still playing catch up from all of the snow days! Some kids are finishing Mary Cassat pictures, some are starting on soap carvings for Michelangelo and some are sketching teachers. We will hopefully begin Monet soon!
Literacy:
We have started a new writing unit this week. We started writing "how to" books." How to skate, how to make cookies, how to make a valentine....these are several of the great ideas!
We also learned a new site word this week....she! Please make sure you are reviewing these site words. We see these in our books quite often!
We continued to study CVC words and review what these are. We found some in our reading and played several fun games with them.
Math:
We continued working on our range cards on Tuesday. There are so many different combinations we can make to get to our target numbers. We also continue to work on story problems each morning. We started working with a hundreds chart and even rolled a dice 100 times to see how many times we could get the same number! This helps us with number sense, quickly recognizing different patterns and counting!
We have a short week this week. We have a half day Thursday and no school on Friday. I hope everyone is almost finished with their valentine couplets! Valentine's Day is almost here!
Hugs,
Mrs. Schultz
