Hello,
It's been a great week!
Math Workshop:
This week we worked on finishing our range cards, playing review math tub games and working on addition/subtraction story problems!
Reader's Workshop:
This week we learned a new sight word: some. We also learned about characters, main events and settings in different books we were reading. We also received our last set of leveled books! Don't forget to review these words each week with your child!
Writer's Workshop:
We are working on finishing our bare books and editing our books that go inside the envelopes in the bare books.
Thematic Unit:
We are still studying oceans! This week we made a "T Chart" and compared what fish need and what humans need. We saw lots of differences but some similarities too! We also completed the writing prompt "If I could be any sea animal I would be _______ because______." We wrote this in our day books.
Book Buddies;
This week we met with our book buddies and played two new math games with them.
1. Race to 20:
Roll the dice and move your marker that many spaces. The first one to get to 20 on the two ten frames wins.
2. Make One Dollar:
Roll the dice, and whatever number you roll, that's how much money you get. Example: I rolled a 6 so I get 6 cents. Everyone is combining their money together and when it equals $1 the game is over. There are pennies, quarters, nickles and dimes. So you also want to exchange each time you roll for the least amount of coins. Example: If I have 15 cents so far, instead of keeping 15 pennies, I would exchange for 1 dime and 1 nickle. This took some thinking!!
Happy weekend!

May 2nd-May 6th
IMPORTANT DATES:
Ocean Play: May 12th at 11:00 in the middle school black box
Author's Tea/Bare Book Reveal: May 24th at 1:00
Kindergarten Water Day: May 30th
**Everyone's adventures with Shelly and Stripey have been so neat! Thanks for taking great care of them. :)
Quick Weekly Update:
This week we finished our handwriting books (yay!), worked hard on publishing our bare books, learned a new dance for the ending of the oceans play and practiced our play/play songs.
Reading: We got new leveled readers and learned a new reading strategy. We learned to look for patterns in our books and look for words that have been repeated on each page (or in the title) so that we don't have to start all the way over when sounding out words. Please return these books FRIDAY.
Math: We learned two new games this week-
1. Build and Remove: Choose a number and build it with unifix cubes. Remove 1 cube and record the answer, 2 cubes and record the answer and 3 cubes and record the answer. Eventually work up to building the cube tower and doing the math before removing the cubes and then checking your answer by using the tower.
2. Pattern Block Grab: Choose a handful of pattern blocks out of a bucket. Build something neat with the pile and record how many pattern blocks you used to build your creation. Pattern blocks are colorful shapes. There are trapezoids, circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, diamonds and hexagons.
We are still learning about the ocean! We plan to build our ocean water bottles on Friday.
Hugs,
Mrs. Schultz
