Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Good evening,

I hope everyone was able to enjoy this beautiful day! We picked our pumpkins and put in our Fall garden. I love the crips mornings and I am so excited tomorrow is October!

I feel like I need to communicate a lot of school information in this post! Please stay with me!

Up coming October events:

Wednesday October 11th at 11-- Fairy Tale Play
Thursday and Friday October 12 & 13th-- No school/teacher conferences
Wednesday October 18th-- Aww Shucks Farm
Thursday October 19th --CSD Kickball tournament
Tuesday October 24th --Pumpkin carving with Dad
Tuesday October 31st-- Parade of fiction

Some Details:

You should have received an  email with all the details from the school.  This is a family event and everyone is invited. Liam and Corey's mom are our class contacts and they will be sending out information about volunteering and booth help. I don't think kindergarten has a theme yet so if you want to jump in and help that would be amazing! I know we need players as well, so please register under the links the school sent out!

Our skit is fast approaching! There is no preparing at home. After the show, we will enjoy some snacks together and if you wish to take your child home with you to relax, it is fine. The event lasts about an hour.

Friday, I sent out a link for conferences. If you did not receive this email please let me know. Conferences will run about 25 minutes long.

I will send out field trip information in a separate email and more specific details as the event approaches.

Literacy:

This week, we focused on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We read different versions of the book and we especially loved the one when Goldi was old and she returned to the bears house to make everything right again. Lucy was our Marvelous Me this week. We compared her name to Levi's and we were able to discuss tricky "y" that likes to steal other sounds. Each week, we will practice the letters, sounds and use manipulatives to learn our friends name.  We worked on a vowel book and we sorted upper and lower case letters. We practiced some sight words that helped us get across the troll bridge.

In math, we focused on counting groups of items. We enjoyed our Teddy Bear Day by graphing gummy bears and measuring our teddy's with cubes and chains.  We are working on tens frames and used our fidget spinners to help us get to ten.  The children, continued to make different types of bridges. We made teddy bear mosaics and used dot markers to represent a number from adding two dice.

We had a visit from the school's counselor's Ms. Jenny and Ms. Karen. They read Chrysanthemum and talked about how our harsh words hurt others hearts. Even though we may apologize and try to make it right it still can leave our hearts wrinkled.  We also were able to attend the fourth graders pirate parade Friday morning. AAAR Matey !

Thanks for all the supplies this week for our centers and I hope you have a great Sunday!

3 Billy Goats Gruff

Literacy Centers:

For such a short week, we had some great center activities. This week, we reviewed all the letter sounds with a fun song and a special "pointer finger". Our story for the week was The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We read three versions and compared the troll in each of them. We acted out the story, sequenced it and discussed the size of the goats.  The children created their own troll by tearing paper. This is a great activity to help strengthen their hands. The children also played a game where they helped the billy goat cross the bridge by reading a letter and basic sight words. We focused on the G sound this week by saying different G words and telling a partner if the G sound was in the beginning, middle or end of the word. The children also worked on a great visual activity where they had to look at a shape pattern and copy the pattern. They then used rubber bands to make the same pattern on a Geo board. This activity helps with visual processing and visual memory. These are very important skills to have for reading!

Science/Math
We began making bridges this week and we will continue this next week as well. We will use many different materials to make the bridges and see if it can withstand our goats crossing.

Library and Reading Buddies:

Once a month we will participate in these two activities. They happened to fall on the same day this month. Beth, from the Davidson library came in and we started our reading buddies with Mrs. Washam's second grade class! The children were amazing and had some great reading experiences!

I promise there will be a sign up sheet for volunteers next week. Please turn in any
CSD cards and money for the school's fundraiser as soon as possible!

I hope everyone enjoys the long break. Safe travels and see you Monday!

Wolves

Our Marvelous Me this week: Levi!!!!

Upcoming events:

Monday 9/18 CSD support cards due back
Thursday 9/21 & Friday 9/22: No School

Dear Parents,

We have spent the week studying wolves and comparing  a real wolf to our fairy tale wolf in the story of The Three Little Pigs. The children are quite fascinated with them and were surprised to learn that dogs are descendants from wolves. We are starting to learn our songs for our fairy tale skit and we will begin to practice our lines next week. September is flying by and we are really settling into classroom routine.

Marvelous Me:

This week, we focused on Levi's name. The children used many hands on experiences to write Levi's name. We used Wikki sticks, Q-tip painting, stamping, rubber bands, stickers, white boards and a pencil to learn the letters. We focused on the sounds and I introduced vowels and why they are special.  This afternoon, we will celebrate Levi by listening to him talk about all the exciting things he brought in to share.

Readers Workshop:

This week, we focused on a book called The Colors of Us. This book follows a little girl around her neighborhood as she encounters people of different color. She describes them in terms of cinnamon, sugar, coco, etc...The children made their own self portraits and mixed their own special skin color.
We reviewed the"ig" family from last week and wrote the word family. The children created a wolf fact book and either wrote themselves or we wrote facts for them. They made finger puppets to retell the The Little Pigs story. They also created a book for Levi where we also focused on correct letter formation of his name.

Math Centers:

We continued to work on writing numbers 1-5 this week. While working on Marvelous Me projects we counted sticker and paint dots that made up each letter of Levi's name. This will be a frequent Marvelous Me activity. Two new math games were introduced. One is build a city where each partner takes turn rolling a die and then they "build" a tower for the city. Then a coin is flipped that has more or less written on it where they compare the buildings.

Science:
This week, science was incorporated into our books. We discussed habitat, herbivore vs carnivore, predator vs. prey and mammals.

We have a few classroom wish items:

  • Small sticker books for fine motor activities
  • oil pastels
  • an electric pencil sharpener
  • fine tip markers
  • air pump for balls

Many thanks,

Mrs. Hazlett

3 little pigs

Happy Friday everyone!

Upcoming Events:

September 13th at 10:45-11:15 school talk with Ms. Joy ( held in Mrs. Robinson's room lower school)
September 15th- CSD Cards due! This is our school's biggest fundraiser! Please do everything you can to sell these!
September 21st and 22nd  --School Holiday

Class climate:

The class as a whole has our classroom routine down pat! We continue to work on following directions and voice level. I am hopeful that we will be able to go to the park starting the last week in September. It is essential for them to be able to follow directions while walking down the sidewalk and being near the pond and we will continue to work on those skills. Any conversations that you would like to have at home concerning these skills would be very helpful. My goal for the first park walk is to have three volunteers.

We have "adopted" a new volunteer in our class.  Addie is in the 8th grade at CSD and she will be helping out in our class each Friday for most of the day. Please help us welcome Addie to our classroom!

Please remember to return the class library books each morning.

I want to take this time as well to thank all of you for the amazing lunches and snacks you pack your child. They are so healthy! I also want to mention that I have observed the school lunches and they also look amazing. Please make sure you check out the hot lunch menu! The link to order hot lunch for your child is on the CSD website.

We continue to learn about each other everyday and I sent home the class book that will be making its way to each of you! I am so enjoying getting to know the kids and the hugs just make my day! Also, those children who arrive before 8:00 am are to go to the gym now. They are collected at 8:00 and brought to our classroom.

Marvelous Me!!!!!

We will start learning all about our friends next week with this fun and interactive activity. Marvelous Me will focus on one child each week. We will learn to recognize, write and spell each child's name. This activity allows us to focus on letter and sound recognition, handwriting, chunking words and syllables.

Readers Workshop:

This week, we used our first fairy tale The Three Little Pigs to learn about character, setting and sequence. The children drew amazing watercolor pigs, they built houses out of Legos, sticks, Lincoln Logs, sticks and play dough. We focused on number 4 and they made a great take home book about the The Three Little Pigs. We read three versions of the little pig story.

Math Centers:

We really focused on numbers 1-4 this week. We also filled in the September calendar. Which gave me a good baseline of the numbers they could and could not write. We made numbers out of sticks, they had to count out a specific number number of sticks and play dough to create a house. We did a lot of building! They also played a game called Big Bad Wolf. They took turns turning over numbers 1-20 and called out their number. If they turned over a wolf he gobbled up the number piggies.

Science:

This week in science we talked about prediction. The children had their first taste of group collaboration and they had to work together to build a house that the wolf couldn't blow down. They used marshmallows, gum drops, tooth picks and straws to construct their houses. Then the "wolf" (my hairdryer) came to blow the houses down. It was EPIC!

September 21st and 22nd  --School Holiday

Dear Parents,

It was so great to see so many of you at curriculum night. I know I covered a lot of information quickly so please don't hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions. We have had a exciting week finishing up our nursery rhyme unit.

Literacy:

This week we read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Kissing Hand, I like me, Chrysanthemum and The Itsy Bitsy Spider.  Our centers focused around these books and we had lots of great activities that focused on letter and sound recognition.

Students used large tweezers to find and match letters and matched upper and lower case letters

Rolled dice to move up the coconut tree

Created Itsy's house so he could come down the water spout!

We focused on the sight word the and counted that it shows up eight times in the spider poem. They also realized that spiders have eight legs! What a fun coincidence!

Math Centers:

This week, two new math tubs were introduced. We used Geo boards to make the number eight, to create hearts, and review our shapes. The students used fidget spinners to graph shapes. We used the unifix cubes to make numbers and letters and the students made spider hats where they counted out eight squiggly legs! We graphed if we liked or disliked spiders. The students wrote their name on a graph and we compared the length of each name.

Science:

Last week, in science we pushed Humpty Dumpty off the wall. The children predicted whether or not he would crack. We compared the differences between a hard boiled egg, fresh egg and plastic eggs. We also used different heights. Humpty had to be pushed from the picnic table to break.

The washable rest mats are going home today! Please return them Tuesday. Enjoy the long weekend!
