Dear Parents,
It was so great to see so many of you at curriculum night. I know I covered a lot of information quickly so please don't hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions. We have had a exciting week finishing up our nursery rhyme unit.
Literacy:
This week we read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Kissing Hand, I like me, Chrysanthemum and The Itsy Bitsy Spider. Our centers focused around these books and we had lots of great activities that focused on letter and sound recognition.
Students used large tweezers to find and match letters and matched upper and lower case letters
Rolled dice to move up the coconut tree |
Created Itsy's house so he could come down the water spout!
We focused on the sight word the and counted that it shows up eight times in the spider poem. They also realized that spiders have eight legs! What a fun coincidence!
Math Centers:
This week, two new math tubs were introduced. We used Geo boards to make the number eight, to create hearts, and review our shapes. The students used fidget spinners to graph shapes. We used the unifix cubes to make numbers and letters and the students made spider hats where they counted out eight squiggly legs! We graphed if we liked or disliked spiders. The students wrote their name on a graph and we compared the length of each name.
Science:
Last week, in science we pushed Humpty Dumpty off the wall. The children predicted whether or not he would crack. We compared the differences between a hard boiled egg, fresh egg and plastic eggs. We also used different heights. Humpty had to be pushed from the picnic table to break.
The washable rest mats are going home today! Please return them Tuesday. Enjoy the long weekend!
Mrs. Hazlett
